perhaps its a tribal or regional thing. But I remember learning some Swahili from a first generation Kenyan in the US (had only been in the US for about 2 years) and for several words (eg. ugali) there would be a nasal sound at the beginning, hence we would hear “ungali” instead of a literal pronounciation of “ugali.” Also if I wrote down “ugali” for him to read, when he read it, to my ears it would sound like “ungali” (with nasal tone added to beginning).
