What do you think would be the best second language to learn and why?

I'm going to learn a language just for fun, and I have no intent on applying it anywhere to get a job or anything like that (I'm going to be a middle or high school band teacher). I'd like something that sounds really cool to a non-speaker, and something preferebly fairly common. Not Swahili or anything stupid like that.
(between spanish and french)– it depends where you live i guess, but if you're not in Lousiana than it would probably be Spanish, because like someone said it is America's second language, so it would just help you more. I live in NYC and that would definitely help you here, as opposed to French, which I am taking cause I like it more–there's always that factor.
